ICES Annual Science Conference 2024

Stronger Shores – Sunderland Marina Oyster nursery

Join this excursion to learn about the Wild Oysters Project!

Friday 13 September
08:30 - 12:30

The Wild Oysters Project: Tyne and Wear is a native oyster restoration project in collaboration between the Zoological Society of London and Groundwork North East and Cumbria. The project has restored an oyster reef off the coast of Whitburn, and deployed 10,000 native oysters onto the site. The project also has native oyster nurseries hosted in Sunderland Marina, acting as a project engagement tool and the mature native oysters release oyster larvae into the marine environment. We regularly monitor the oyster nurseries for survival and associated biodiversity, during the visit our team will provide you with an introduction to the project and provide the opportunity for you to get hands on with our oyster nurseries, and help the team complete our biodiversity monitoring to see what marine organisms are inhabiting the nurseries.

Max number of participants: The visit is limited to a number of 75 participants and seats will be given on a first come, first served basis.

Fee: 33€

Registration: Sign up for the excursion at the same time as you register for the ASC. If you have already registered for the conference, send us an email and we will send you a excursion registration link.
