MEESO

Ecologically and economically sustainable mesopelagic fisheries

Lead organization: Institute of Marine Research (IMR), Norway

Duration: 2019-2023

ICES contacts:

Vaishav Soni, Data Scientist
Lise Cronne-Grigorov, Project Officer

Project objectives:

The overall goal of MEESO is to quantify the spatio-temporal distributions of biomass, production and ecosystem role of
mesopelagic resources and to assess options to sustainably manage and govern their utilization. To reach this goal,
MEESO will create new knowledge and data on the mesopelagic community, its biodiversity, drivers of its biomass, its role in
carbon sequestration, its role in the oceanic ecosystem and its interactions with the epipelagic community which includes
several important commercial fish stocks.

ICES role:

  • Work Package lead of Data management and dissemination
  • Embedding ICES standards and protocols in the data collection processes of the project, ensuring hosting of the data beyond the project life cycle

This project has received funding from the European Commission - Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement no 817669.
