The concept of landings is a crucial one in marine science and fisheries stock assessmsents. Here, Valerio Bartolino, member of the Herring Assessment Working Group (HAWG), outlines what is meant by the term.
'Landings are the amount of marine organisms which are harvested and brought to land. The landing may be different from the catch, which includes also the amount of organisms discarded at sea. Sale notes, logbooks and landing declarations are the main sources of information on landings.'
