Sustainable aquaculture

Aquaculture is one of the fastest growing food production sectors in the world today. 
What is happening?

With increasing global demand for fish and other aquatic foods, aquaculture production has leapt from 3.2% of global fisheries and aquaculture production in 1950 to 47% in 2016. Combined global fisheries and aquaculture production is now 171 million tonnes.

What does ICES do?

ICES recognises the dramatic growth of aquaculture and its important influence on the food system, society and the environment. We are expanding its work on science and advisory topics contributing to the sustainable development of aquaculture, to support emerging needs in member countries and beyond.

Issues being addressed include:

  • the social and economic consequences of aquaculture operations
  • disease risks and actions that can be taken to address them
  • environmental impacts of aquaculture
  • aquaculture risk assessment
  • carrying capacity and relative efficiencies of alternate aquaculture systems
  • genetics of cultured species
  • projecting the future development of aquaculture
  • implications of aquaculture for the food system and food security                           

These challenges are tackled by a growing portfolio of our expert groups supported by the Aquaculture Steering Group
