Establishing integrated ecosystem observation and monitoring systems

The goal of SGIEOM is the implementation of integrated monitoring programmes in the ICES area. Through establishing integrated ecosystem observation and monitoring systems, SGIEOM enables coordinated data collection in support of scientific and advisory needs. These systems have strong links with both ICES data centre and national observation centres. The quality and delivery of data products along with their suitability for integrated assessments will be the focus to ensure the development of best practices.

This includes surveys and other sampling and data collection systems, external peer reviews of data collection programmes, and training and capacity-building opportunities for monitoring activities.

Advancing integrated ecosystem observation and monitoring systems in the ICES context

  • identifying and prioritising ICES monitoring and data collection needs.
  • reviewing monitoring requirements for science and advisory needs
  • evaluating and optimising monitoring strategies in the context of the capabilities of, and requests from, ICES Member Countries and clients
  • refining the methodology for observation and monitoring of marine ecosystems in the ICES area
  • promoting new and capable technologies and opportunities for observation and monitoring

ICES has five Steering Groups (SSGs), which provide a home for our Expert Groups. The membership of each SSG consists of a the chairs of the Expert Groups affiliated to the SSG, plus an SSG Chair. The SSGs manage the science portfolio and ensure that delivery is coordinated and driven by the needs of the ICES Implementation Plan, as well as by bottom-up developments.
