Understanding the marine ecosystems response to change

ICES Steering Group on Ecosystem Processes and Dynamics (SSGEPD) works towards an integrated understanding of marine ecosystems and their response to change. To assist in the development of Integrated Ecosystem Assessments (IEAs) and the provision of management advice, SSGEPD delivers ecosystem indicators of state and function.

Understanding the marine ecosystems response to change in the ICES context

  • describing and quantifying the state of North Atlantic Ocean regional ecosystems
  • understanding the impacts of climate variability and change on marine ecosystems and their responses (e.g. forecasting trajectories of changes across various geographical and scales, performing vulnerability assessments for key species)
  • resolving and quantifying ecological processes in marine ecosystems, including modelling the dynamics of food webs and their responses to environmental change
  • quantifying the role of structural and functional diversity in marine ecosystems in providing stability and resilience
  • analysing the external and internal ecosystem processes and responses and their role in causing recruitment and stock variability, depletion, and recovery
  • developing end-to-end modelling capability to fully integrate natural and anthropogenic forcing factors)
  • quantifying the relationship between habitat condition, ecological processes, and the provision of ecosystem goods and services

ICES has five Steering Groups (SSGs), which provide a home for our Expert Groups. The membership of each SSG consists of a the chairs of the Expert Groups affiliated to the SSG, plus an SSG Chair. The SSGs manage the science portfolio and ensure that delivery is coordinated and driven by the needs of the ICES Implementation Plan, as well as by bottom-up developments.
