Benthos Ecology Working Group

BEWGBEWGTrueSilvana Ecology Working Group

ICES Benthos Ecology Working Group (BEWG) focuses primarily on long-term series and climate change, benthic indicators and EU directives, and species distribution modelling.

The work of BEWG is structured under four core topics: long-term, benthic series and climate change, benthic indicators, species distribution modelling, and disentangling the link between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning.

Six initiatives are ongoing within the group:

  • Further planning of the ongoing work already initiated under the Study Group on climate related benthic processes in the North Sea (SGCBNS)
  • Getting the Benthic Long-term Series Network (BeLTS-net) launched
  • Initiating the investigation into how benthic indicators can be both compared and complement each other
  • Final revision of the BEWG review paper: "Species distribution modelling and mapping in the marine environment and its relevance for ecosystem management"
  • Further development of the link between ecosystem functioning and benthic diversity
  • Further development of the position paper on "Linking benthic ecology to ecosystem services"

Four new initiatives (case studies) have also recently been developed and launched:

  • "Towards the quantitative benthic species distribution model-ing for ecosystem functioning: linking bioturbation potential with nitrate cycling"
  • "On the variability in expert assessment of benthic species tolerances/ sensitivities, as used in several multimetric indices"
  • "Towards efficient and effective monitoring programmes for benthic multrimetric indices"
  • "On biological trait analysis in benthic ecology"
